Ammonite Falls remains one of my favourite waterfalls in the Nanaimo, BC area as it was one that really started to get me into waterfall photography. I was fortunate enough to capture this with snow as it’s not as common in that area. This once was more of a quiet location but now there’s been a pathway (with stairs) as previously a rope was used to climb down and the banks were eroding. There’s two ways to get to this waterfall which I will describe below and the hiking lengths are different with different challenges.
This is a little more interesting, this is almost the same spot on December 27, 2017 (my first time visiting – when there were still ropes to get down) vs January 1, 2022.
Location
Jameson/Jinglepot Road (more commonly known) – https://www.alltrails.com/trail/canada/british-columbia/ammonite-falls-regional-trail
This parking lot is approximately 5.5km round-trip with not too challenging of an elevation gain.
Weigles Road (Benson Creek Falls Regional Park in AllTrails) – https://www.alltrails.com/trail/canada/british-columbia/benson-creek-falls
This parking lot is approximately 2.9km round-trip but you need to take a decent amount of steps down, cross a bridge, then back up on the other side. The distance is shorter but it’s definitely a bit more challenging. Also, during the winter be very careful as it can get slick on the stairs.
